| Hackney Free Students take a look at their
GCSEs |
Hackney pupils recently recorded the best GCSE results in the
borough's history.

Free School who was mentored by Gregory Thwaites
from the Bank of England.
Provisional results show that 44% of Hackney
pupils achieved 5 or more A* - C grades in their
GCSE exams. This is an improvement of almost 5% on last year’s
figure of 39.2%, which was also a record, and continues the upward
trend started in 2002 when 31.1% of Hackney Pupils achieved 5
or more A*- C grades at GCSE.
The percentage of pupils receiving good GCSEs in Hackney
schools has risen by almost half in just two years.
Half of Hackney’s secondary schools now have 50% or more
of their pupils receiving 5 or more good GCSEs.
The Hackney Schools Mentoring Programme (HSMP) team is delighted
to see these results.
Stuart Feakins, Manager of the HSMP says: "These results
are a great tribute to the Learning Trust and all staff in schools.
We are also keen to acknowledge the work of mentors at all ELBA
companies who have supported students over recent years and helped
them to focus on their academic achievements. Although obviously
there are a number of factors that affect these results, we are
convinced that mentors influence over their young people has had
a hugely positive impact."
Hackney schools may have been closed for the summer but there
certainly has been no break for the HSMP team who have been extremely
busy with the training of new mentors. With a new batch of 400
Year 10 pupils signed up, it’s all hands on deck to find
volunteers for the year. Ten training sessions over the past month
meant new recruits could sign up for a date that suited them.
So far 160 people from companies such as Allen
& Overy, UBS, Linklaters
and Freshfields have been trained.
