HSMP update

Spring 2009

Jane Tusar Lloyds of London with Clapton Girls Mentees

Bowling Good Fun

Forty Year 10 students on this years’ Hackney Schools’ Mentoring Programme had a great bowling session in March with their mentors. Students have been meeting their mentors after school in the city since September, so the bowling trip was a treat and a great way to get the ball rolling after the Christmas break!

Competition on the lanes was fierce and the girls enjoyed showing their individual bowling styles. Programme Co-ordinator Estella Maselino is very pleased with the commitment shown by the 60 students on the scheme this year. “We have had excellent feedback from the mentors in AON and Lloyd’s based near Liverpool Street. The girls get to see what the world of work is like and have been getting help in thinking about their future careers.” For more information on the programme go to www.hsmp.org.uk or call the HSMP team on 0208 8820 7428

Selda Kurtulda of Skinners School and Lynn Dalton of Linklaters role-play interview techniques

Skinners’ learn interview skills

HSMP Mentees from Skinners’ Company School for Girls were joined by their mentors from Linklaters for a practical session on Interview Skills. The mentors acted out worse case scenarios and gave the students examples of how not to dress; how not to behave; how not to wear make up and how not to lie on your CV’s! The students watched sketches and then had to decide why the person wasn’t given the job. Was it the bright blue eyeliner or the huge dangly earrings? Was it the interviewees lack of French when he claimed it was almost a second language? Or was it the short response that didn’t answer the question? For more info on interview skills contact HSMP on 0208 820 7428

Slaughter and May mentor, Ivo Stourton's, book

Mentor book success - The Night Climbers

Ivo Stourton, trainee solicitor with Slaughter and May and currently
mentoring a student from Stoke Newington School, started writing
poetry and short stories when he was about nine or ten.
Ivo gets his ideas by reading novels, newspapers and magazines;
watching TV and the news and by going out and watching the world.
He says “sometimes an idea or an image or a story just sticks to my
shoe and ends up getting walked around.”
He is currently working on a thriller set in a depression era
London of the near future.
He believes that inspiration can be found anywhere, especially if you
are in a good mood.
Check out Amazon.co.uk for a review of The Night Climbers.
For all you budding writers check out the Commonwealth Foundation
website for a £2000 short story competition. Only 600 words needed.
Like Ivo says, there are a lot of things out there to inspire you.

York University running a session with Mossbourne on Higher Education

York University meets Mossbourne

Eight students from York University gave a short talk to 40 HSMP mentees from Mossbourne Academy at Schroders last month. The talk covered the advantages and disadvantages of higher education and choosing which University to attend; along with courses and what to expect in terms of extra curricular and social opportunities. The breakout groups then came together to discuss findings & answer questions. The informative, but fun event was much appreciated by the Mossbourne mentees. One student said he now realises that “getting a degree opens doors.” Other students comments were: “I learnt that you need to aim higher and work harder.” “A better education, especially a University education is likely to get you a better job.” “The session encouraged me to actually think about going to University.”

HSMP Summer Cycling Event

This summer Hackney Schools’ Mentoring Programme is joining forces with Cycling Club Hackney to launch a new social event for all the HSMP mentors and mentees of 2008/09! At 11am on Sunday June 28th 2009 all eager participants will meet up in London Fields for a sunny cycling day around the city.
