HSMP update

April/June 2005

The Hackney Schools’ Mentoring Programme (HSMP) has had a busy start to the year. A 30% uplift in student and mentor numbers has meant that ELBA has had to do two ice-skating sessions for some schools!

This was Admin Assistant, Aisha Ikram’s, maiden performance on the ice but, unfortunately, mum-to-be and Jane Torvill impersonator Deryl Walsh, HSMP Mentor Co-ordinator, was forced to watch from the sidelines. From the photographs you can see that, despite the harsh conditions, both students and mentors thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The HSMP has been involved in two important events in the last quarter:

Alicia Weston receiving her award from Warwick Smith
(both of Macquarie Bank Foundation)

1. Macquarie Bank Foundation Awards Ceremony

The HSMP Team attended an awards ceremony for Macquarie Bank Foundation employees, held at City Point, to celebrate the achievements of Alicia Weston who has been mentoring students on the programme for the past five years! Alicia was presented with her award, together with a cheque for £4,000 which she kindly donated to the HSMP. The money will help extend HSMP’s outreach to more Hackney School Children in the future.

Warwick Smith, Director of the Macquarie Bank Foundation, commented on the evening that it was the first time a bank employee outside of Australia had won this award, and as such it was recognition of the extent of her achievements.

2. City & Hackney Teaching Primary Care Trust (tPCT) Conference

It’s not an easy task to get thirteen giggly girls from Our Lady’s Convent School in Stamford Hill to a conference on a wet Tuesday morning, but if there’s a cute boy on the door it certainly helps!

The students, who are currently being mentored by City & Hackney tPCT staff, were invited to take part in a conference to launch the Trust’s Minority Ethnic Groups Network on March 1st. This event took place at the Hackney Empire and enabled students to hear first hand how discrimination and barriers to ethnic minority achievement in the NHS were being made a thing of the past. There were several inspiring speakers from the NHS on hand to recount their experiences, Diane Abbott MP for Hackney, gave the girls her perspectives, and there was an opportunity for the girls to feed back to the conference their views on careers and roles within the NHS.
