About the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY campaign

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY: The campaign for 2005

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY is a movement challenging the UK government to use its influence with the leaders of other rich nations throughout 2005 on three key issues:

· trade justice

· drop the debt

· more and better aid

Why 2005?

2005 offers the people of the United Kingdom unprecedented opportunities to influence global decision-makers.

This means that the UK is in a key position to influence other rich governments and the financial institutions they control.

Reforms in trade, aid and debt would release resources for developing countries to tackle vital issues like HIV/AIDS, a lack of access to clean water and better sanitation, healthcare, and education. Success would mean a real improvement in the quality of life for more than one billion people living in extreme poverty across the world.

Do you realise that you can influence the Prime Minister, the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the UK government? When you speak out, your voice travels down the corridors of Westminster and can be heard speaking through the people you challenge.

If you have a voice that can be heard in places where issues such as global poverty and injustice are discussed, isn't it time you started talking? 2005 is our opportunity to speak up with those who cannot be heard.
