Local Mentors
HSMP realise that Hackney is one of the most ethnically diverse
boroughs in the country. As such, we actively recruit local mentors
from all backgrounds to work with students who may be unable to
travel out of the borough to the city.
These mentors may be self employed, working in the creative sector,
or attending a college or university nearby, who want to give
something back to the community they grew up or live in, and make
a positive influence on a student’s life.

Fahisa from Clapton |
Relationship profile
Musarat is an ex-Clapton student who has been involved with the
Mentoring Programme since August 2004. She is currently mentoring
two Students at Clapton Girls' Technology College and fits in
time to meet them between her work in retail.
“The mentoring programme is good because our mentor
is really nice. She has given us good advice and has taught us
how to be more confident. We want to continue mentoring in the
long term because our mentor is herself and really funny. She
has given us revision techniques which are useful and have helped
us a lot.”

“At the end of this programme I hope to gain experience
with young people and different cultures/backgrounds. We meet
once a week. So far me and the girls have had a general chat,
talked about homework, their future, played games - we have really
got to know each other. I enjoy being around them.”

“I hope to achieve good grades and communicate with
someone outside school, at the moment I am getting help on homework
and coursework. I think my mentor is excellent, loving, and helpful.
She is a nice person to co-operate with and I like her very much."
