Haggerston School

Haggerston School for Girls is a creative learning community with a priority for “a love of learning”. The school’s aim is to develop confident, responsible young women who will contribute to and lead society in the 21st century.

All members of Haggerston’s community contribute to its success as a popular, multi-racial 11-16 girls’ comprehensive school. Over 30 home languages are spoken by Haggerston pupils. The school has a register of approximately 900 girls from years 7 to 11. In year 10/11 a work experience programme has been set up for the girls.

HSMP's Deryl Walsh and Aisha Ikram with Haggerston Students and Mentoring Co-ordinator, Ron Keating

Haggerston School has rapidly increased its student involvement over the past year. At the moment there are 100 students matched to 49 mentors, most of whom are from Freshfields Brukhaus Deringer, a law firm based in Fleet Street.

Ron Keating, the school co-ordinator says “this is by far the largest group we have had going through the mentoring programme; its successive growth year on year is a result of widening the horizons of our pupils and building on the positive experiences of previous years. This programme gives our pupils a sense of reality about routes for success based on the observation of professionals. It has to be said that our pupils also educate their mentors about life of a pupil in Hackney! Mentoring can help give students a clearer understanding of different careers and of what steps they can take to access those jobs”
